Table 1e – Common auxiliaries of place

Scope Note: The place auxiliaries indicate the geographical range, locality or other spatial aspect of a subject denoted by a main UDC number. Most importantly, place auxiliaries are the primary facet in the subdivision of 913 Regional geography and 94 History

Application Note: The place auxiliaries are applicable throughout the main tables when the place aspect is secondary to the subject. In a compound number place auxiliaries are normally cited after the main number. However, to achieve a desired sequence, place auxiliaries can also be cited first e.g. (73)339.5 USA – Foreign trade or even intercalated in a UDC number, e.g. 354(44).51 French ministry of justice. In addition, a place auxiliary can be used on its own when the place is the only aspect that is required for document organization (e.g. maps). The political section of table (4/9) Countries and places of the modern world, is subdivided as far as counties, departments or equivalent administrative units. Smaller units may be denoted by using special auxiliaries (1-2/-4) and/or alphabetical extension (Table 1h)

The world according to physiographic features

Scope Note: This alternative arrangement makes provision for users wishing to organize the regions of the world by physiographic features in accordance with their position on the map, rather than either by a specific physiographic feature which is provided for by the numbers from (21) to (289) or by their continental or political designation, as provided for in (4/9). Just as (3) designates the areas of the world according to a Western view of ancient history, and provision is also made for collocating areas, irrespective of date, in (4/9), a similar provision is made here for those who view the world from the physical geographic point of view. The same concepts may be expressed, if preferred, through the use of the remainder of the table together with the special auxiliary number (1-92)

Application Note: Details by colon combination with the remaining numbers at (2) and those at (4/9). If this alternative table is used, the special auxiliary (1-92) and other numbers from (2) cannot be used, except when colon combination with the subdivision of (29) is used for further specification
